Suppliers
A supplier is an auxiliary account, a party record created on the Auxiliary Accounts screen, like every client, employee, partner and bank. That guide covers the fields; this one covers which account a supplier belongs on, and the one rule that decides whether it shows up in your reports.
Pick the List first, then the account
Set List to the supplier type before you touch Account. With nothing chosen, the account dropdown offers every auxiliary account in the chart at once. suppliers, clients and everything between, and you are hunting through the lot.

Supplier accounts
Libra's Lebanese chart ships with the supplier accounts already paired, one for VAT and one without:
| Account | Meaning |
|---|---|
| 40111 | Suppliers - subject to VAT |
| 40112 | Suppliers Non VAT |
| 40311 | Fixed Assets Suppliers - subject to VAT |
| 40312 | Fixed Assets Suppliers Non VAT |
| 4015 / 4035 | Notes payable |
| 4018 / 4038 | Outstanding invoices |
| 4039 | Earned discounts & allowances |
Post on those, not on their parents 4011 and 4031. The VAT box on the supplier record is not something you tick, it arrives already set, because it comes from the account: 40111 is a VAT account and 40112 is not.
Buying a computer, a vehicle or machinery is not the same as buying stock. That supplier goes on the fixed-asset pair (40311 / 40312), so the purchase lands with your assets and not in your cost of goods.

Four suppliers, four answers
Almost every supplier you meet is one of four cases, and the difference is only ever which account and which two boxes:
| The supplier | Account | VAT | Non resident | Fiscal number |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local, registered for VAT | 40111 | arrives ticked | no | yes, with its 601 / 604 / 605 prefix |
| Local, has a fiscal number but is not VAT-registered | 40112 | no | no | yes |
| Local, no fiscal number at all - the trader with a van, the corner supplier | 40112 | no | yes | none |
| Foreign, outside the country | an account you open for them (the training uses 40113) | as applicable | yes | none |

Two things people get wrong here. You never tick VAT yourself - it arrives set from the account, which is the entire point of the VAT / non-VAT pairing. And a foreign supplier's currency defaults to LBP, so switch it to what you actually trade in before saving.
Accounts you add yourself
The pairs above are the shipped baseline. A business with a real reason to separate a group of suppliers opens its own account beside them, a separate account for foreign suppliers under 4011, say, or a dedicated account for one fixed-asset supplier under 4031. That is ordinary chart work: see how to open an account, and remember that an account can only take children before anything has been posted on it.
The non-resident rule
Tick Non resident on a supplier when:
- It is foreign (outside the country)
- It has no fiscal number at all (the trader who turns up with a van of goods and an informal invoice).
Purpose: non-resident suppliers are left out of the top-10 suppliers report, which is meant to show the parties you are formally registered as dealing with.
This matters far more for suppliers than for clients. A retail customer with no fiscal number is just an end consumer and nobody minds. A supplier you buy stock from with no fiscal number is a real gap, and marking it non-resident is how you keep the report honest.
Suppliers you never resell from
Not everything you buy is stock, and the supplier accounts above are only for the parties you buy goods from. Two more accounts carry the rest:
- 4619: out-of-investment expenses: everything you buy and do not resell. Electricity, rent, cleaning, water, the office coffee. The test is that phrase - bought, never resold.
- 4659: other suppliers, which is where shipping, customs and clearing agents sit. It splits into
46591 Other Supplier with VATand46592 Other Supplier Nont Vat. The second description carries a typo in the shipped chart, so search the picker for465rather than for the word.
A supplier of fixed assets is a third case again - see the fixed-asset pair above. Creating an expense or shipping supplier walks through all three on screen.
Next: The Auxiliary Accounts screen for the fields, how to create a supplier for the steps, or expense & shipping suppliers for the ones you never resell from.

(Suppliers Non VAT) |
(Fixed Assets Suppliers Non VAT) |
(Notes payable) |
(Outstanding invoices) |
(Earned discounts & allowances) |

46591 Other Supplier with VATو46592 Other Supplier Nont Vat.
